Director of Data Engineering

Workiva is seeking an experienced Director of Data Engineering to lead our data engineering team and drive data-driven decision-making across the organization. As the Director of Data Engineering, you will be responsible for understanding the data needs of the enterprise, developing and executing a strategic roadmap to maximize data capabilities, and transforming data into insights that inform business strategy. With new products and services on the horizon, you will play a key role in scaling our data engineering team to meet the evolving needs of the business. What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with Business & IT teams to establish and communicate a clear data warehouse strategy

  • Manage a team of data engineers, providing leadership and guidance to a diverse team of entry-level to senior-level engineers

  • Design, build, and manage data pipelines for data structures, including data transformation mapping, data flow diagrams, logical and physical data models, and metadata collection, ensuring data integrity and quality

  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and oversight to build reliable and scalable data pipelines, data models, and data visualizations

  • Collaborate with all functions of Workiva to ensure data needs are addressed and the required data is modeled and available to analysts and end-users

  • Assure that all IT data models (Conceptual, Logical, and Physical) are documented to facilitate efficient and effective use of data

  • Lead planning sessions with internal business customers to improve business processes and prioritize investments in data and infrastructure, understanding business needs and translating them into data solutions

  • Work closely with the Enterprise Center of Excellence (ECOE) and Principal Engineers to ensure that all data systems align with the technology strategy

  • Utilize best practices for naming, governing, managing, modeling, cleansing, transforming, moving, storing, and searching all data

  • Ensure changes to the data environment are compliant with architectural standards

  • Lead design and data model reviews, providing constructive feedback to Application Developers

  • Support and influence data governance initiatives, promoting data-driven decision-making and fostering a culture of data excellence within the organization

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in information management, data science/analytics, or a related field

  • 10+ years of overall experience working with data and information management tools.

  • At least 8 years of experience working with the physical and logical architecture of data systems

  • Minimum of 5 years in a technical leadership and management role, showcasing experience in leading and mentoring teams

  • Must have experience with modern data visualization tools; Qlik, Power BI, Tableau etc., Big Data environments; Azure Synapse, Snowflake etc., Cloud Data warehouses, ETL tools and practical experience creating such environments and delivering on business ROI

  • Proven track record of driving self-service reporting and fostering a data-driven culture within an organization, promoting data democratization

  • Proficiency in data modeling software tools such as Erwin or ER/Studio

  • Experience in project management planning, organizing, coordinating, and managing staff, clients and/or partners

How You’ll Be Rewarded:

  • Salary range in the US: 

$167,000.00 - $284,000.00

  • A discretionary bonus typically paid annually

  • Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire

  • 401(k) match and comprehensive employee benefits package

The salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this job in the US. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and other relevant factors.
