FATMAP has offices in Chamonix, France, Berlin, Germany, Vilnius, and Lithuania, and supports fully remote employees across the EU. Candidates must be located within +- 1 hour of Central European Time to be considered for this role.


About This Role

Strava recently announced the acquisition of FATMAP, which is revolutionizing the way people discover, plan, live, and share their adventures. Their advanced 3D mapping technology, outdoor toolkit, and curated adventure index are used by top professionals and a rapidly growing community of outdoor enthusiasts, allowing them to enjoy better, safer adventures.


FATMAP is expanding its core technology development efforts. They are looking for an experienced and hands-on Senior Staff Engineer or Principal Architect to strengthen their teams with their expertise.


FATMAP has the best tools for terrain analysis combined with the content discovery that users expect from a modern mapping product. To keep the FATMAP experience ahead of competing products, they are pushing their technology even further.


FATMAP’s mapping stack is using bleeding edge technologies, is fully cloud-based, and to a large extent automated, enabling them to produce imagery, vector, and layer-based mashes laying the fundament to achieve the stunning mapping experience of clients powered by this technology.


FATMAP’s business is B2C, creating great services and applications for end-users. Their next-generation clients follow clean architecture patterns, using the most recent frameworks and utterly modern SW design, connecting to their microservices landscape via GraphQL.


We are looking for people who are excited to face these challenges. You will work in the chief technology office with peers sharing the same vision, reporting directly to the CTO.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Drive deliberate, clear, and consistent software design

  • Understand requirements and convert them into specifications helping to create solution architecture for given use cases

  • Work with subject matter experts and domain owners on cross-functional challenges

  • Hands-on, pragmatic contribution to the solution, either as tracer bullets or as part of the engineering team

  • Take steps to learn and understand required technologies, tools, and approaches where needed


You will be successful here by:

  • Mentoring other engineers and up-leveling the organization by writing documentation, and posts and giving tech talks about your work.

  • Acting as the librarian of the stack, connecting people, and teams and connecting the dots

  • Designing solutions to growth, product, and technology challenges, which are carried out by engineering in general or yourself in particular


We’re excited about you because:

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture

  • In-depth knowledge of functional and object-oriented design

  • Experience in the mapping space

  • In-depth understanding of application architecture, cross-platform development, distributed systems, and API design

  • Rock solid, language-agnostic engineering skills

  • Familiarity with Git

  • Fluent in at least two programming languages (ideally at least one is C++, Golang, Ruby, or Python)

  • Ability to work asynchronously in English. We are a distributed company, and we communicate a lot in writing and chatting over zoom. Good English language skills are a must, as is a disciplined approach to documentation and tickets, and a friendly, collaborative demeanor.
