Canva’s Commitment and Mission
At Canva, we celebrate diversity. We deeply believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key to building the best product, team and company. We look for many different skills and abilities, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. So, even if you don’t think you quite meet all of the skills listed or tick all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!
Our mission at Canva is to empower the world to design and since launching in 2013, we have grown exponentially, amassing over 100+ million monthly active users across 190 different countries and a team of over 3,000 people… and the best bit is that we’ve only achieved 1% of what we know we’re capable of.
Join us and design your future.
About the Team
We want to be the most-accessible design tool in the world – and with strong sustained internal support from leadership and core product teams, our Accessibility Team is set to achieve this mission. Canva is in a really exciting position in the accessibility space where we need to think about how everyone can use the product as well as how people can make designs that are accessible, ideally by default. Imagine being able to expertly use a design tool to make a breathtaking design without seeing it. This is a deep complex problem that is on the cutting edge of not just frontend engineering but also modern web applications.
About the Role
You'll gain hands-on experience writing accessible code and collaborating with the team to define and champion the best practices throughout the company. Engineers with proven coding and communication skills and a desire to help people with disabilities use the web better should apply right away for this exciting job.
What you’ll do
Work in a cross-functional team to build features that make Canva designs accessible
Build efficient and reusable frontend abstractions and systems
Collaborate with the team and other engineers outside the team to find issues across the product and communicate clear actions. Empowering other engineers is one of our team’s core values
Contribute to defining, improving, and codifying best practices and methodologies for frontend engineering at Canva
Craft and present engaging presentations to the frontend specialty
Participate in design and code reviews
What we're looking for
We'd love to hear from you if you fit one or more of these:
Experience developing rich web applications, ideally Typescript/React/MobX
Deep nuanced appreciation and understanding of different disability models, universal design and accessibility-related standards
Experience writing accessible code and reading detailed specifications (WCAG 2.1 AA, ATAG 2.0) but a genuine interest and dedication to crafting an accessible experience for all users goes a long way
Minimum two years experience
Practical knowledge of data structures and algorithms
Nice to have:
Working with a design system or maintaining components other teams depend on
